Boils Quick, Perfect Pouring Spout
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Best hot water kettle I have had in all the years (30+) I have been making tea and coffee (using a cone/filter over the mug). I’ve used stove-top, whistling, stainless steel, two different shapes of Le Crueset kettles, electric countertop, cheap, expensive, you name it. This kettle boils the water very quickly, the unit shuts itself off automatically on boil, AND, wonderfully enough, the pouring spout is a perfect shape – no drips, spurts, or flying water when I pour. Also, it’s kind of fun to see the water boil. The best kettle I’ve ever owned. I may go back to using a Chemex for coffee again. The quick boil and optimally-shapped spout would be perfect to make Chemex coffee. (Coffee made with water at 205 degrees F (boiling) is the best coffee).Aroma AWK-161 Clar-i-Tea 1-3/5-Liter Electric Water Kettle and Tea Brewer

- Fantastic kettle for a range of uses….

This is a fantastic appliance. I needed something for work when my office relocated and did not bring along our nifty water filtering machine that provided fantastic hot H20.I was just looking for a stainless electric kettle much like the Hamilton Beach one used in my home but came across this one at Target. It is really excellent and I am pleased with it overall, very pleased.
PROS:
1. Heats water really rapidly, (and the clear glass makes it sort of fascinating to watch if you are really simple to entertain…..)
2. The inside of the lid has a nice small hook for hanging tea bags or a tea filter spoon thingey, but the lid also has a nice filter screen in the spout so if you just want to throw in a hand full of tea leaves, they will stay in the pot when you pour your tea….no need for an extra strainer.
3. The inside of the pot does not have any heat elements and is all smooth. Per the box, you can also use it to heat a bunch of food items such as quick noodles (which drove my co-worker wild at the thought she could cook those at her desk), oatmeal, baby formula, soup, other hot beverages, etc. Not sure I would want to clean all that up, but it is clear it will work for those purposes if you want to go thereCONS:
1. It is really kind of loud when it starts getting warm, but luckily that lasts only a few moments.
2. No “keep warm” function…that would be nice, but probably would also increase the price. I agree with the other reviewer that you can just reheat things, but since this pot heats quickly, if you do that you will want to certainly keep your eye on it… or risk boiling the H out of whatever you are reheating.
3. Does feel a bit…well, let’s say “non-durable” rather than flimsy. Highly functional piece and seems pretty well made, but not necessarily a rugged piece. I don’t know how well the on/off switch and lid might hold up over time if they are being used by folks who are kind of rough on things without thinking….
4. As for the cleaning concern: the glass will clean up fine…may tend to cloud up with tea residue over time, but that is not a fault of the product…happens to any glass teamakder and you just have to clean that up; the lid and other parts seem to wipe up easily; the screen on the spout filter is very fine and may collect tea residue over time. On other items I have found this cleans up well enough with an ancient toothbrush and some detergent. I didn’t read this part through, but am 98% sure you cannot place this puppy in the dishwasher…the heat element is attached to the POT and sho nuf it says “Do Not Immerse”. So, hand washing seems to work fine. Would DESPISE to burn up some oatmeal in this and have to clean that out!!! But that would be a USER malfunction, ahem.
All in all I reckon it is a excellent item, reasonably priced (would ahve loved to pay less, but then, I reckon that Target was only charging $39.99 for this when I bought it in December….) and I am glad I got it. I have been using it once or more daily for about a month. So far, so excellent. I don’t expect it to quit working, but then I am thoughtful about how I handle my appliances. If I was a “switch masher”, I might worry that it would stop working. I will update if it just cacks out and stops working prematurely (ie, well before the end of the warranty….)

Someone I know online got the AWK-161 at Target and questioned me to post this review for her: It’s been so awesome, I must extol it’s awesomeness! Folks in the UK and Australia can make fun of me — I’m in the USA and kettles aren’t as well loved here apparently. All of my tests start with COLD water from my tap. I live in North Dakota, it is winter, and right now it’s -7F outside, so the water is plenty cold. Obviously if you place some hot water into the kettle, you’ll get a quicker boil (I recommend it!). So these times should be taken as absolute worst case scenario — your water heater is broken and all you get is cold
.To boil the minimum amount of water my kettle allows (0.7L — a small more than my French Press takes): 3:23
(coffee break time)
Maximum water (1.7L): 8:04
1.4L: 6:37Approximately 1.4L on the electric stove top in a copper bottom pot: 10:48
Approximately 350ml (a huge mug I have from Disney World) in the microwave (probably about 700w cooking power): 5:30
As a quick comparison, 1.7L of hot water out of the kitchen sink takes 4 minutes to boil in the electric kettle.
- Has a critical flaw
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This is one of the few electric kettles I found with no plastic under the water line–although it does have a silicone gasket between the glass and metal parts. It boils quick and is reasonably simple to clean.BUT, it has a fatal flaw. The non-detachable mesh screen connected to the lid is not stainless steel. It visibly rusted within a week of purchasing the product. I called Aroma (the manufacturer) and they sent me a replacement, which started to visibly rust in 24 hours! This is not okay. Any metal in the product should be food grade stainless steel.
- start it twice
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I like this tea kettle a lot, and would probably buy it again, aside from two small flaws.(1) Every time I turn the kettle on (by pushing the lever on the side “up”) it starts to heat and then nearly immediately shuts itself off. Start it again and it heats up fine. I have no thought why this is the case, but it’s very consistent.
(2) I reckon the kettle is probably designed assuming you are going to fill with cold water, hang the tea ball and insert the lid, and then turn on the heat. I don’t place tea — loose or bags — into the water until after it has boiled. The hook on the lid is nice, but you have to be very careful about steam burns when you do this.
I note the comment about the mesh screen rusting and I agree with that assessment. Also, white plastic is nice but possibly not the best choice when dealing with tea, since it stains.
Overall I prefer my stainless steel Breville and a excellent tea pot.

This was bought for my 91 year ancient mother. She drinks tea several times a day, and in her words, “Likes, likes, likes this teapot.” She has been looking for a glass teapot that she can watch brew her tea, usually bag type, and was very pleased to find this item.

very pretty pitcher

I chose Bodum because I wanted a glass water pitcher that would be elegant yet functional. The pitcher is fantastic for what I needed. I do not use the plastic filter. The lid cap is hard to keep tightly sealed with the rest of the lid seal. I have not checked if this would work better if I used the plastic filter? I just don’t want my daily water to have plastic standing in it all day. - DeLonghi ESAM6600 Gran Dama Digital SuperAutomatic Espresso Machine

this is a fantastic machine. it makes perfect cappuccino and coffee, with very small work. if you can afford it get it. the only reason mine went back is that there are alot of plastic parts inside the machine, that I could see wearing out. At this price point I don’t want to see plastic parts. but my friend has had his machine for over two years with no issues. - MaxiMatic EHC900 Elite Cuisine 4Cup Percolator White
